My Boys: Not So Much Sex In A City Barely Resembling Chicago

By Kathryn Ware

How hard does My Boys suck? Pretty hard. Strained, tired, and outright weird references to the Billy Goat (“You know, the place that’s underground? ), Kingston Mines (“We had great seats!”), and Lord & Taylor (Lord & Taylor?!) aside, it’s clear the writing staff knows nothing about baseball, poker, heavy metal, or the male-female dynamic. Which pretty much leaves the show with nothing but a chick who looks cute in her softball uniform. And while that’s certainly something, it’s also certainly not enough.
To get a sense of the absolute horror that is My Boys, which airs Tuesday nights, we’ve compiled two lists of comments posted on the TBS-My Boys message board – 10 critical comments that sound like they come from genuine viewers, and 20 praiseworthy posts that sound to us like plants from the TBS-My Boys staff. You be the judge.
GENUINE COMMENTS –
1. HOLLYWOOD IS STILL MAKING WOMEN LOOK STUPID

Why do you continue to air shows that portray women as DUMB idiots? Every woman knows that guys hang around so they have a chance to sleep with you. Do you think that you can change mankind by airing these shows? Do you enjoy making women look stupid? Please pull this ridiculous show and replace it with something that is more real.

The blatant product placement pissed me off, literally. Here I was watching what I thought was a rather lame comedy (as compared to its counterpart SATC) and what I was actually watching was a 30-minute infomercial for Match.com. I felt violated and my “trust” in the entertainment value of the show – albeit very little as it was – was gone. They sucker punched the audience and there is no excuse for that.

Wasn’t that NY style pizza they were eating? Oh the humanity . . . . .

The pizza I order in the suky 708 (and even tons of places in the city) are all cut in squares. Aside from Ginos, I can’t recall eating pizza cut in large Pizza Hut triangles.

I have lived in Chicago almost all of my life, and this show is a joke. If they are going to be in Chicago, they should film the entire thing in Chicago. The show needs to stop trying so hard, we got it the show is set in Chicago, stop mentioning every Chicago landmark, restaurant, or bar, and if they are mentioned or if they are shown at least show the real places. What is with the one guy who is constantly wearing Chicago t-shirts, no Chicagoan would ever do that. This show *****.
7. My Boys is bottom of barrel. Some serious rethinking is needed.

I thought this whole premise was a joke till I saw the promos then this board.
Her boys are her family, which sometimes hinders PJ’s dating life, as the men she tries to date don’t know how to react to her unconventional interests and the all-important men in her life.”
Gee you think?
I have had friends foolish enough to hook up with someone that only has and hangs with opposite *** friends. If your a true friend, they deserve a beat down from you for extreme bad judgment. Anything more then a booty call here is a sure sign of someone with low self esteem. and any woman or guy that trys to play it down, does so out of self-dishonesty and self centered selfish cake and eat it too. Well, that or they are a swinger.
Thought provoking? Yea about as much as to why Dogs eat their own crap. It’s a pretty sad commentary on society when this level of dysfunctional feminism passes as entertainment. It’s become Hollywood typical for our selfish dysfunctions in life to become glorified social habits in the entertainment world. Even more of a sad joke that so many can relate . . . Cough, I wouldn’t be too proud of that fact . . .
8. This show is really lame

How can this show be compared to *** and the City?
A bunch of twenty something’s sitting around drinking beer, exchanging clueless dialog, is enough to make one doze off.
It’s really pretty lame. Give it one season max.

It’s not the inside jokes that will kill the show. It’s not that people who don’t live in Chicago just won’t “get it” and therefore kill the show. It’s that the show is INCREDIBLY LAME AND NOT FUNNY that will kill it.
I mean, c’mon. Women have to be “girly” to get the guy? Men want a woman to be passive and helpless? How ridiculous, and how insulting to both sexes.

Please dont invest anymore money into this nicoragan 2nd hand discount ***** house
thanks for trying for trying even tho its a flop

Hi all,
A friend of mine turned me on to this show a week ago, so I checked it out. I loved it immediately. I’m a single guy, but if I can find a girl like PJ out there somewhere, I’d marry her instantly. 🙂
I just started a Yahoo Group for this show. If anyone is interested in joining and sharing their thoughts on the show, please sign up here:

Hope to see you there!

I love this show….I have read how others feel it betrays journalist in a non-factual manner. I look at it as a TV show that is entertaining. As a female that is very much a sports fan…and loves to play most any sport…I can so relate to the character PJ. I mean I can wear heels but much rather have my ball cap and jeans on , and hang with my guys…a lil less drama. It’s nice to see a show that can bring this aspect to the lil screen. I watched and loved *** and the City but feel that I relate much more to My Boys. SITC and MB are two totally different styles and characters…I like that. Just a funny thought here ….If PJ were to get married would her bridesmaids be bridesmen???? LOL I was thinking about this last night after the eppy ….I know at this time I would only have my guys standing for me 🙂 LOL…being the guys girl that I am. Bravo to the creators and keep it coming !!!!

It is kinda how *** in the City used to do it. They are almost trying to make Chicago another character. I think it is cool.
9. I absolutely LOVE this show…

I can’t begin to say HOW MUCH I love this show… PJ reminds me sooo much of me only that I’m just a TAD bit more girl”ish”… (lol) I can’t wait to see what happens next with PJ and Bobby! I had/have a similiar situation as well only there WAS a little more there. lol…
Well I hope whoever reads this also loves the show just as much as I do and keeps watching. We have to keep those rates up, SEASON 2 here we come… =) A little far-fetched but hey so were the Red Sox when they won the World Series…
10. More of Andy!

I really like Andy’s character. I want to see more of this Sierra Mist guy on the show! Putting the farm scene together was hilarious! More Andy!!!!

Are you from Chicago? Are you a baseball fan? Seems to me that these 2 things are what make this show great. Being both from Chicago and a Cubs fan, I can’t get enough of this show. My husband is also from here and a Sox fan. He loves it as well. Oooo – interesting story line potential there!
My concern with it – people who aren’t from Chicago won’t get the many references that make it so funny. I hope that the inside jokes don’t kill the show.

I truly love this show! I thought it was not going to be funny but boy was I wrong. I enjoyed PJ and the way she is. I hope the show continues on TBS for a long time.
14. “My Boys”

I think “My Boys” is going to be a great series. Finally, TBS is creating an original comedy series that is not reality-based. Bring back the Braves and we’ll be set to go!

I haven’t followed a series for quite some time. However, I can see myself watching this series week after week, because I can relate to it.
Seeing PJ screw up with that guy… made me think about how many times I did the same things she did. Being “too much of a guy”.
I really like the show! I can’t wait to see more.
17. I have one complaint…

By: scorpio76
I am not into the fact that Bobby is intimidated by PJ. Why should she be punished because she is an aggressive woman? Why is he so insecure outside of traditional male gender roles? I get that this is part of the story and I do love the show. I just hope that Bobby becomes a more evolved male on this show and appreciates PJ for the woman she is; aggressive and straight forward. Otherwise I hope to see her move on to someone who won’t be as threatened by her.
18. I loved this show!

This show is great! A little something for the girls and a little somthing for the boys. I would love to see Brennan and PJ get together. I hope the chemistry I saw and the foreshadowing at end of second episode I saw is true. I like the way all the characters mix. I also like PJ alot. I like how just because the girl is one of the boys does not mean she’s not girly. Hope this show does well. I’m looking foward to seeing more episodes : )
