Hi from the Community TV Network Youth Media Center. For the last four years we’ve provided a safe learning space for Elsa Concepción. Here’s her story.
“My name is Elsa. Since 2014 I’ve been part of this organization and it’s transformed me into a dynamic, smart, creative woman. Allow me to say why.
“Four years ago, I came here to learn film, but there’s more I’m getting from here. I found enormous support from CTVN staff during a tough time I had after my dad passed away. CTVN became a safe place for me to go to. Since then I’ve learned to cope and learned so many cool things!
“My documentary How to be a Man, on how sexism is affecting young adults, won ‘Best Doc’ at the Our Voices Film Fest in Vancouver and was the official youth film selection for the Screen Test Film Fest in Schaumburg. I’ve developed strong research and producer skills for human rights journalism and documentary.
“I spearheaded CTVN’s digitizing program, and am currently teaching other youth how to digitize VHS. As Leading Intern for Hard Cover, our youth TV show, I train new interns. I was recently accepted to Harold Washington College and plan to transfer to a four-year university to study education and film. I’m not sure I would be here now if not for staff and classmates.
“Let me tell you more about CTVN. They use media education to empower Chicago’s low-income teens and youth of color. CTVN helped my friend Hayley solidify her love of film, and she is now majoring in it at DePaul. My friend Cherakee has a creative outlet in design and gets paid to do what she loves. Some of my classmates are from broken or abusive homes. CTVN is a safe space from outside stress for us all. The adrenaline of completing a video is different from, ‘My family sucks.’ And we’re learning critical thinking skills through the editing process.
“CTVN is here whenever we need it. They offer interactive workshops, genuine mentorship, and classes taught by dynamic, award-winning instructors. Most importantly, CTVN taught me that my voice matters. This is only possible through the generous funding we receive from community members like you.
