“ApparAm Apparatchik Balks At ‘Ghost-Voter’ Moniker”: “We’re ‘The Apparitional-American Community’ now – not ‘The Ghost Voters,'” former Commissioner Carson thundered . . . “The plain ironical fact is, it’s us’d be the real deal, except in’ fer they won’t give us genuines the damn suffrage! Instead they wink at a cabal of cronied-up ballot-boodling incarnos seeking favored-minority status by ersatzly representing’ thesselves as bein’ hainties.”

(PICTURED): ELEVATOR COMMISSIONER / GAME WARDEN AT LARGE:
“Fiddlin John Carson (1868-1949) had been rewarded for his campaign minstrelsy with a job as elevator commissioner (which meant he sometimes ran the elevator in the capitol) and another as game warden at large . . . Fiddler enjoyed his elevator work, especially when Uncle John (Patterson) was there with his banjo to assist in regaling passengers . . . Fiddler liked to call out crazy names for the different floors of the capitol, in the manner of a train conductor . . . The bottom floor might be ‘dugout’ . . . The floor of the Governor’s Office might be ‘Sugar Creek’ or ‘The Promised Land’ . . . The floor where the legislators orated was called, with startling accuracy, ‘The Gas Chamber’ . . . The top floor, which contained flora and fauna exhibits from the Department of Natural Resources, might be ‘Noah’s Ark’ or ‘Garden of Eden’ . . . In 1935 he was elected by the House of Representatives as assistant doorkeeper. The Georgian for January 23, 1935, shows a picture of John stopping the speaker pro tem, Ellis Arnall (who two years later would be governor), in order to check his admission credentials” . . .
