Cab #21

Date Taken: 08/10/07
From: Wicker Park
To: Greektown
The Cab:
Cab #21 apparently dates back to the days before their were dividers between passenger and driver. Ah, those good old days of innocence, when passengers could be counted on to not stick a shiv in a cabbie’s ribs or throw up on his iPod.
But could this really be Cab #21? The 21st cab license handed out by the city? I mean, that’d be really cool, but is there a missing number or two? Maybe this is Cab #2112. How cool would that be? The Rush cab.

Pool Daze: It Happened One Summer

By Leigh Novak

There is something to be said for the effects of hard work. Real sweat, even bloodshed; putting food on the table and pouring your last into the American Dream.
I started working at the age of 13, keeping books for a branch of ServiceMaster. My mom was able to locate this gig for me through one of our church-going acquaintances. Goddamn that post-worship church coffee hour, for allowing my mom to whore me off into her sugar cookie networking, as only a post-worship coffee hour could. That place was crawling with women looking to get rid of their children for an afternoon, my mom obviously included.
This short-lived employment involved me commuting a few miles, via car and licensed adult driver, to the home of our church friends; appropriately on Sunday afternoons, following coffee hour. Just what I needed as a teen; one more reason to hate Sundays.

Letter from Minneapolis: About a Bridge

By Don Jacobson

When this generation of Minnesotans are asked years from now where they were on Aug. 1, 2007, I’m sure there’s going to be about a half-million of them who’ll say they were right on the 10th Avenue Bridge, riding their bikes from Seven Corners to “the U,” as the most horrible tragedy this state has seen since the 1940 Armistice Day Blizzard unfolded beside them on the freeway span a few yards away. The reality is that most of them will have only seen it on TV. I’ll be able to forgive them, though, for feeling like they were there – the I-35W Bridge is about as “Minneapolis” as it gets. Not that it was beloved or anything, but anyone who was raised here feels its place at the heart of who and what we are as a city. We’ve all been over it so many times, it was “ours” in a very real way.
And in an instant, it – and, tragically, an as-yet uncounted number of our fellow citizens – were just gone. No warning. No preparation. The city will never be quite the same.
