Chicagoetry: Ten Angels Too Many

By J.J. Tindall

Ten Angels Too Many
I am not
A man of faith
But I pray
Like Hell.
Sauganash himself was like:
“I play de fiddle
Like de Devil
And I run a hotel
Like Hell.”

I pray because
It makes me feel better,
It makes me feel
Better.
Like eating good, cold, forbidden plums.
I am not
A man of faith!

I am a man
Of pure self-interest, fellas.
I moved to West Town
In the late ’80s.
Rent was cheap
And beer was cold.
My landlord clearly
Cut corners.
I accepted it as
The cost
Of doing business.
I was a grown man,
Not a teenager.
Today I aspire
To write a poem
Where I have no clue
What to say,
(this is Williams)
I have
No clue
What to say.
But I know this: today
There are ten angels
Too many.
And it needs
To stop.
