This is a non-CTU strike column; it’s a moving target today. Let’s see what shakes out.
Also, I’m on a deadline for an assignment and I’ve also spent entirely too much time on Twitter today battling the forces of factual evil. So I’m just going to turn the top of this column over to our very own David Rutter, who sent me this note the other day:
“This falls under the general description of answers that I don’t know, but apparently everyone else does.
“Cheryl Burton is getting the Chicago Journalists Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award this year. The CJA president says it’s to honor this: ‘Chicago has watched a career built on hard work and merit and conscientious commitment to diverse narratives, with a strong sprinkling of resilience and humility, and firm dedication to giving back through service work with myriad organizations.’
“Whut?
“But this is the question – and I ask not as a jerk smart-aleck – but what exactly does a news anchor do that is journalism? This has baffled me for my entire career. I literally have never understood why reading the news on TV is journalism. I grant that ‘news anchoring’ can be a great performance, but is it journalism? I must be missing something important. Everybody seems to know the answer and affirmation without a second thought. What am I missing?”
My response:
“I turned to Wikipedia to try to find some answers. Voila!
“Prior to Burton beginning her career in broadcasting, she was on television on Romper Room, a contestant on Star Search, and hosted an hour-long cable TV show called Simply Elegant . . . In addition to being on television, Burton was a cheerleader. She was part of the Chicago Honey Bears cheerleading squad for the Chicago Bears for three seasons from 1983-1986.”
Does that answer the question?

Also, it’s never been exactly clear to me what the Chicago Journalists Association is. The Chicago Headline Club is bad enough but . . . sheesh.
