Interjecting myself between Rahm Emanuel and Bob Schieffer on Sunday’s episode of Face The Nation.
RAHM: First of all, the president immediately ordered an investigation into what happened in Benghazi.
RHODES: As any president would. But he won’t immediately release the results.
RAHM: Second, he wants to find out who’s responsible.
RHODES: As would any president.
RAHM: And third, he will bring them to justice, just like he brought Bin Laden and al Awlaki in Yemen.
RHODES: Meaning he’ll take out any 16-year-old unfortunate enough to have chosen the wrong father as well?

The few tributes that have come in over the last few days for former Secretary of State’s Office investigator Russ Sonneveld, who died last week from cancer, have been heartwarming reminders of real heroes in our midst, but hardly sufficient recognition and reward for a man who had the courage to do what was right – and face the consquences – instead of going along to get along. That, my friends, is not the Chicago Way.
Let’s take a look at Sonneveld did for the citizens of Illinois, through those tributes as well as excerpts from One Hundred Percent Guilty, the book by his partner Ed Hammer about how their role in taking down George Ryan.

“[O]n Saturday, a man was buried with no media frenzy,” John Kass writes. “His death wasn’t a big story. It was an important story, but a quiet one. Russell Sonneveld was 63. He died last week after a lengthy battle with cancer. He left a son, Nathaniel; a wife, Florine; a sister, and two brothers.
“He wasn’t some politician. He didn’t dangle tax dollars before the people as a feast so they’d eat his sins. Sonneveld was a cop. He did his job. That led him to investigate his boss, Ryan. Without Sonneveld and his partner, Ed Hammer, George Ryan would probably be a free man today.”

Politics, Race And Our Narrowing Discourse
“Citing concerns about fairness and balance, WBEZ-FM (91.5) has dropped the weekly talk show hosted by Tavis Smiley, the PBS late-night interviewer, and Dr. Cornel West, the Princeton University professor,” Robert Feder reported for TimeOut Chicago last week.
“A Chicago Public Media spokesman cited audience erosion for the move, adding: ‘More importantly, the show had developed much more of an ‘advocacy’ identity, which is inconsistent with our approach on WBEZ. The goal is to present public affairs content that is reasonably balanced. We feel that Smiley & West had become a departure from this approach.’
“In explaining the decision to PRI, Torey Malatia, president and CEO of Chicago Public Media, said the show was ‘becoming like Democracy Now, and veering too far from WBEZ’s declaration of principles.'”

A delegation representing dozens of community, labor and faith-based groups gathered at City Hall on Wednesday to deliver an open letter to the mayor expressing concern about recent changes to the city budget process that virtually eliminate public participation.
The groups that authored the letter, and the communities they represent, are concerned that the changes will keep the city’s working families from having a say in budget cuts likely to increase Chicago’s poverty, unemployment and foreclosure rates – and to deprive vulnerable community members of essential services.
